This training is designed for a new graduate student, intern, and/or a mental health professional wanting ideas for more creative and interactive activities. Participants will be immersed into the world of play therapy through interactive activities, videos, and learning exercises. During this training, participants will explore the history and rationale of play therapy, benefits of play, and explore play therapy’s journey to becoming an evidence-based practices. The major theoretical approaches to play therapy will be explored as we discuss the therapist’s role in the playroom. Participants will be introduced to the toys and materials needed to set up a play therapy room as well as the assembly of a portable play therapy kit. Participants will also be introduced to limit setting, handling the unexpected, and play themes in the playroom. Directive play therapy approach, techniques, play therapy in multiple settings, and cultural considerations will also be addressed. If you are ready to change the way you work with children and adolescents in more playful and creative ways, then this training is for you. This is a six-hour informative, action-packed, and experiential training that will leave participants with ready-to-use tools to be implemented in sessions with children and adolescents.

Objectives:

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe play therapy and its benefits for helping children heal.
2. Identify how to select materials needed to set up a play therapy room and assemble a portable play therapy kit.
3. Discuss how directive play therapy techniques can be sued and applied in different settings.
