The 5 A’s for Behavioral Healthcare Providers / Motivations Interviewing Skills Based Lab

As providers, we have made the question of smoking status an integral part of the assessment process.  For patients who use tobacco, this might be an intimidating question to answer.  The 5 A’s training is based on the CDC Best Practice recommendations for a brief discussion of tobacco use, motivational interviewing techniques to determine motivation to change, and appropriate information and direction for cessation assistance.  The more familiar providers become with asking the right questions and motivating to treatment, the more patients will make another attempt to quit.  Overall, these methods have shown improvement in the number of attempts to quit and the number of patients who are quitting for good.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe best practice recommendations on starting a discussion on tobacco use with clients to lessen anxiety and increase interest in cessation
  • Practice motivational interviewing techniques to learn more about the clients’ stage of change and how to address recommendations in relation to that stage
  • Describe the 5 A’s and their importance in directing clients into cessation treatment to improve their quality of life
  • Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to increase one’s intrinsic motivation to change
